Despite the fact that I have barely left the house in over a month now, I cannot figure out why my time is more limited than ever! Oh yeah… I have kids. Between homeschooling, working, cooking and cleaning up after every single meal plus snacks, trying to keep myself and the littles active and healthy, and the list goes on and on… I can barely find time to sit down! Despite all of the day to day craziness, I have been learning (actually re-learning) to speak Spanish with the app Duolingo!

After trying several different ways, including audiobooks, textbooks, other apps and learning from family members; all with little success, I finally found something that works and it is actually FUN! This app is designed to keep my attention and doesn’t force me to spend hours a day listening and translating. Duolingo is more like a game! I get rewarded for completing lessons and for just showing up each day for 15 minutes oh and did I mention it is totally FREE?!

During ‘Shelter In Place’, I have heard from so many people that they have a lot of extra time on their hands while at home. In this case, Duolingo is also a great way to come out of these trying times feeling accomplished as a bilingual! It is perfect for busy schedules and a perfect boredom buster. I also plan to teach my kids with the same app. I just know they will love it since it is so user friendly.

I am also very much looking forward to our future travel plans to Mexico as soon as we are able to safely travel that is. I have family in Mexico so it will be wonderful to visit them and have real conversations with them in their native language rather than them always having to speak ours. Mexico, here we come!

What is Duolingo?

Duolingo is the world’s most enjoyable way to learn a language for FREE! Since it is built to play like a game, this app makes learning actually fun and a lot easier. Based on learning science, Duolingo is effective and has a cool new feature called Duolingo Stories. The stories are short and use the language you choose in a more relatable real-life scenario. Not to mention Duolingo has more than 35 languages including High Valyrian for the Game of Thrones fans!

How To Get Duolingo:

Duolingo is available at duolingo.com as well as:

Apple App Store (IOS)

Google App Store (Android)

You can also try Duolingo Stories – available on the App or by visiting stories.duolingo.com

What is Duolingo Plus?

This is a premium version of Duolingo that costs $9.99 per month (or less if you subscribe for longer), and features no ads so you can learn without interruptions and the ability to save courses for offline learning. It also has other neat features so you can learn at your own pace, like progress quizzes to track your progress. When you subscribe to Duolingo you’re also helping the company’s mission of bringing free education to millions.

I am only a week into using this app and I already feel much more comfortable with the language. I am looking forward to tracking my progress and practicing over the phone with my grandmother.
